Junior Lifeguards takes place during two summer sessions. Junior Lifeguards are put into groups based on age and ability. Classes meet in the morning or afternoon Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and all day on Thursday. Junior Lifeguards does not meet on Fridays. To register for Junior Lifeguards, click here.

Who needs to take a swim test?

New Junior Guards will need to pass a required swim test before they can register for the program. All swim tests must be supervised by a member of our staff. These tests are scheduled each year well in advance to the start of the first session of Junior Guards, and participants can take the test as many times as they need. There is no fee to take a swim test. 

Swim test requirements:

Youngers (ages 8-11): ability to swim 100 yards (4 pool lengths) in 2 minutes and 20 seconds.

Olders (ages 12-15): ability to swim 100 yards (4 pool lengths) in 1 minute and 50 seconds.

Picnics and Competitions

Picnics: Last Thursday of each session.

Field Trip: Flyers with detailed information will be given out prior to field trips.

Competitions: Small competitions will be held throughout the sessions; the Ironchild event is held on the last day of each session. 

Schedule:

The Junior Lifeguard program is open on a space-available basis. Fees include shorts, T-shirt, rashguard, towel, group photo, and picnic.

Junior Lifeguards are put into groups based on age and ability. The Morning session meets on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The Afternoon session meets on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Junior Lifeguards does not meet on Fridays.

Session 1 of the Junior Lifeguard program will take place from June 17 - July 3, 2024. Session 2 will take place from July 8 - July 25, 2024. 

Fees:

The fee for Session 1 is $345 for Laguna Beach residents, and $360 for non-residents. 

The fee for Session 2 is $360 for Laguna Beach residents, and $385 for non-residents. 

 

Earlybird registration is for RESIDENTS* only until March 25 at 5pm.

Open registration for residents AND non-residents begins on March 25 at 5pm. 

* A resident is defined as those who live within the boundaries of the Laguna Beach Unified School District. 

Uniform and Gear:

Program fees include shorts, T-shirt, rashguard, towel, group photo, and picnic. Junior Lifeguards must report in uniform each day, and bring the following items:

• Swimming fins (duck feet or Dafins preferred)
• Hat, sandals, water and towel
• Backpack that holds all gear
• Sunscreen
• Lunch on most Thursdays
• No jewelry allowed, except a watch
• Girls wear a navy blue one-piece swimsuit
