The Laguna Beach Police Department wants all children to travel safely in cars. We know that installing a car seat for younger children and babies can be a challenge, and we have certified instructors trained by the Safe Kids Worldwide and NHSTA organizations who can help. Our Community Services Officer will provide child safety seat checks to parents and caregivers offering education, and hands-on assistance with the proper use of child restraint systems and seat belts.

Be Prepared to Learn

This isn’t like getting your car's oil changed where you leave the car and go do something else. Working with a technician will be a one-on-one learning experience. Afterwards you should be confident that your child’s seat is installed correctly, and you should be comfortable reinstalling it on your own. This may be the most important thing you learn.

Preparing for Your Car Seat Checkup

  • If possible, schedule an appointment one to two months before your baby's due date in case you deliver early.
  • If your child is already born, know their weight and height. If possible, bring your child with you. If possible, also bring another adult to watch the child while you are learning.
  • Try installing the seat in your vehicle before your appointment. Use your vehicle's owner manual and the instructions that came with the child car seat.
