Trash, Recycling, and Composting

Reducing Waste in Your Backyard

Residential yard waste adds up to about 15-30 percent of what we send to our landfills in Orange County. Yet, leaves, grass and yard trimmings can be easily composted in our own backyards. Also, planting water-wise gardens reduce waste and saves water and prevent urban runoff pollution. Learn more about organics from CalRecycle

Composting

The City of Laguna Beach and its solid waste contractor, Waste Management, team up each year to host four free composting classes for residents. The City also offers a "Kids Can Compost" class at the elementary schools annually and focuses on young gardeners and their parents.

Composting is a simple and natural way to turn yard and food waste into valuable organic fertilizer for the garden. Compost Bins and Worm Bins are available for purchase during the classes at a discounted price.

For more information regarding the classes, contact the class instructor, Lisa Ryder at (310) 874-2499. For other questions, please contact Liz Vazquez-Avila, City of Laguna Beach Public Works Department, at (949) 497-0344.

Laguna Beach residents who attend the free composting class are eligible to enter a drawing to win a free composting bin!

Grass Recycling

Grass recycling is a simple and natural approach to lawn care. Clippings are left on the lawn after mowing to decompose quickly. That way you can save time, get a great lawn, and help the environment all at once.
